Când am început „Ascunsă în umbră”, am crezut că va fi doar un alt thriller scandinav rece și calculat. Dar m-am trezit prinsă în poveste și în emoțiile ei, de parcă aș fi fost chiar acolo, în Åre, cu zăpada care scârțâia sub pașii mei și cu umbrele care ascundeau adevăruri dureroase.
Hanna Ahlander m-a cucerit de la primele pagini. Este o polițistă care a trecut printr-o perioadă grea: cariera i s-a prăbușit, viața personală este un haos, iar acum încearcă să se adune. Mi-a plăcut cât de umană este – nu este eroul perfect, ci cineva care greșește, se teme și totuși merge mai departe. Alături de ea, Daniel Lindskog este un personaj care dă profunzime poveștii: un polițist devotat, dar sfâșiat între muncă și familie. Dinamica dintre ei adaugă căldură și tensiune în același timp.
Crima care zguduie comunitatea – găsirea cadavrului lui Johan Andersson, fost schior olimpic, acum instalator – declanșează un val de suspiciuni și dezvăluiri. Soția lui, Marion, pare neajutorată, dar indiciile sugerează că viața lui Johan nu era deloc simplă. Apar secrete de afaceri, resentimente vechi, legături ascunse. În același timp, povestea Rebeckăi Ekvall, prinsă într-o căsnicie sufocantă cu un pastor respectat, adaugă o notă tulburătoare: în spatele zâmbetelor publice și al convențiilor sociale se ascund frică, rușine și dorința de evadare.
Atmosfera este incredibilă. Viveca Sten transformă Åre într-un personaj viu: frigul, vântul și întunericul de iarnă fac ancheta mai intensă și mai neliniștitoare. Am simțit fiecare pas prin zăpadă și fiecare ezitare a personajelor, iar asta mi-a ținut respirația întretăiată.
Îmi place cum autoarea nu grăbește dezvăluirile. Fiecare indiciu este lăsat la locul lui, iar tensiunea crește treptat, până când adevărul iese la suprafață – un adevăr care doare și care arată cât de complicate sunt relațiile dintre oameni.
Pentru mine, această carte merită toate cele 5 stele. Nu doar pentru că este un thriller bine construit, ci pentru că m-a făcut să simt empatie pentru personaje, să reflectez asupra alegerilor și secretelor lor. Este un roman despre crimă, dar și despre fragilitatea umană, despre cât de greu poate fi să porți adevăruri în tăcere.
Dacă îți plac poveștile care combină suspansul cu emoțiile reale, „Ascunsă în umbră” este o lectură pe care nu vei regreta că ai ales-o. Este genul de carte care îți rămâne în minte și în inimă, chiar și după ce ai închis ultima pagină.
Hidden in Shadows – Viveca Sten (Aremorden, #2)
When I started „Hidden in Shadows”, I thought it would be just another cold, calculated Scandinavian thriller. But I found myself completely drawn into the story and its emotions, as if I were right there in Åre, with the snow crunching under my feet and the shadows hiding painful truths.
Hanna Ahlander won me over from the very first pages. She’s a police officer who’s been through a rough time: her career has collapsed, her personal life is a mess, and now she’s trying to pull herself together. I loved how human she feels—she’s not a perfect hero, but someone who makes mistakes, feels fear, and still keeps going. Alongside her, Daniel Lindskog adds depth to the story: a dedicated police officer, but torn between work and family. The dynamic between them brings both warmth and tension.
The murder that shakes the community—the discovery of Johan Andersson’s body, a former Olympic skier now working as a plumber—sets off a wave of suspicion and revelations. His wife, Marion, seems helpless, but the clues suggest Johan’s life was far from simple. Business secrets, old resentments, and hidden connections begin to surface. At the same time, Rebecca Ekvall’s story—trapped in a suffocating marriage to a respected pastor—adds a disturbing layer: behind the public smiles and social conventions lie fear, shame, and the desperate desire to escape.
The atmosphere is incredible. Viveca Sten turns Åre into a living character: the cold, the wind, and the winter darkness make the investigation even more intense and unsettling. I could feel every step through the snow and every hesitation of the characters, and it kept me holding my breath.
I love how the author doesn’t rush the revelations. Every clue is left exactly where it needs to be, and the tension builds gradually until the truth comes out—a truth that hurts and shows just how complicated human relationships can be.
For me, this book deserves a full 5 stars. Not just because it’s a well-constructed thriller, but because it made me feel empathy for the characters and reflect on their choices and secrets. It’s a novel about crime, but also about human fragility and how heavy the burden of unspoken truths can be.
If you enjoy stories that combine suspense with genuine emotion, „Hidden in Shadows” is a read you won’t regret picking up. It’s the kind of book that stays with you—in your mind and in your heart—even after you’ve turned the last page.
