„Crima din Mesopotamia” de Agatha Christie este un roman polițist cu o atmosferă aparte, care te scoate din clasicele saloane englezești și te duce direct în mijlocul deșertului, la un sit arheologic din Hassanieh, în Irak. Aici, o echipă internațională de arheologi lucrează împreună, dar între ei planează o tensiune ciudată, greu de explicat. Toți par nervoși, încordați, iar centrul acestei neliniști pare să fie frumoasa și misterioasa Louise Leidner, soția conducătorului expediției.
Louise este o femeie elegantă și inteligentă, dar pare mereu speriată. Spune că se teme pentru viața ei, iar când asistenta medicală Amy Leatheran este chemată să o îngrijească, începe să observe și ea că nu este totul în regulă. Louise îi mărturisește direct: „Mă tem că o să fiu ucisă!“ La început, nu știi dacă este vorba doar de o minte tulburată sau de o amenințare reală. Însă, când Louise este găsită moartă, devine clar că fricile ei au fost justificate.
Printr-o coincidență, în apropiere se află nimeni altul decât Hercule Poirot, care tocmai încheiase o anchetă militară în Siria. Ajuns la fața locului, celebrul detectiv începe să pună întrebările potrivite și să observe ce alții au trecut cu vederea. Fiecare persoană din expediție devine suspectă: soțul, care pare prea calm; arheologii, care au reacții ciudate; și chiar asistenta, care poate nu spune tot adevărul.
Mi-a plăcut mult decorul exotic, sentimentul de izolare, dar și cum Agatha Christie a știut să creeze o atmosferă plină de suspans, cu personaje bine conturate. Finalul este ingenios, chiar dacă nu la fel de șocant ca în alte cărți ale ei. Uneori, ritmul a fost puțin mai lent, mai ales în partea din mijloc, dar investigația lui Poirot a compensat prin logică și claritate.
Ofer patru stele pentru că, deși am apreciat misterul și atmosfera unică, am simțit că povestea ar fi putut fi puțin mai intensă emoțional. Totuși, „Crima din Mesopotamia” rămâne o lectură solidă pentru fanii genului, cu o intrigă bine construită și un final demn de faimosul Poirot.

„Murder in Mesopotamia” by Agatha Christie is a detective novel with a unique atmosphere that takes you far from the classic English drawing rooms and places you right in the middle of the desert, at an archaeological site in Hassanieh, Iraq. Here, an international team of archaeologists is working together, but a strange, hard-to-explain tension hovers among them. Everyone seems nervous, on edge, and at the center of this unease is the beautiful and mysterious Louise Leidner, the wife of the expedition leader.
Louise is an elegant and intelligent woman, but she always appears frightened. She says she fears for her life, and when nurse Amy Leatheran is called in to look after her, she begins to notice that something really isn’t right. Louise confides in her directly: “I’m afraid I’m going to be killed!” At first, you’re not sure whether it’s just a disturbed mind or a real threat. But when Louise is found dead, it becomes clear that her fears were justified.
By coincidence, none other than Hercule Poirot is nearby, having just wrapped up a military investigation in Syria. Upon arriving at the site, the famous detective starts asking the right questions and noticing things others have overlooked. Everyone on the expedition becomes a suspect: the husband, who seems too calm; the archaeologists, who act strangely; and even the nurse, who may not be telling the whole truth.
I really enjoyed the exotic setting, the feeling of isolation, and how Agatha Christie managed to create a suspenseful atmosphere with well-developed characters. The ending is clever, even if not as shocking as in some of her other novels. At times, the pace was a bit slower, especially in the middle section, but Poirot’s investigation made up for it with logic and clarity.
I’m giving it four stars because, although I appreciated the mystery and the unique atmosphere, I felt the story could have been a bit more emotionally intense. Still, „Murder in Mesopotamia” remains a solid read for fans of the genre, with a well-constructed plot and a finale worthy of the famous Poirot.
