După ce am citit primul volum din „Umbrella Academy”, am fost curioasă să văd ce urmează pentru această familie disfuncțională de supereroi. Așa că am continuat cu volumul doi, „Dallas”, care duce povestea într-o direcție și mai haotică, plină de paradoxuri temporale, personaje bizare și confruntări sângeroase. Deși are momente interesante, nu pot spune că m-a cucerit pe deplin – de aici și cele trei stele.
Povestea continuă cu frații Hargreeves, care încearcă să-și revină după dezastrul din primul volum. Numărul Cinci, care poate călători în timp, este personajul principal de data asta și aflăm mai multe despre trecutul lui și despre organizația misterioasă pentru care a lucrat, Comisia. Mi-a plăcut să-l urmăresc, mai ales că este un adult într-un trup de copil, dar un asasin cu experiență în minte. El este forțat să se întoarcă în timp ca să asigure… asasinarea lui JFK. Da, sună nebunesc – și chiar este.
Ceilalți membri ai Umbrella Academy sunt într-o stare cam jalnică. Kraken vrea să fie lider, dar pare pierdut. Spaceboy încă suferă de pe urma greutății lui și a sentimentului că nu mai are un scop. Rumor are o poveste secundară interesantă, dar nu este prea prezentă, iar Seance, cu puterile lui de a vorbi cu morții, oferă cele mai multe momente ciudate, dar și câteva amuzante.
Apar și personaje noi, ca Hazel și Cha-Cha – doi asasini mascați, îmbrăcați ca niște mascote, care sunt atât de absurzi și violenți încât devin aproape comici. Nu pot spune că m-au convins – uneori par scoși din altă poveste și prezența lor înlătură din greutatea emoțională pe care o așteptam.
Grafica semnată de Gabriel Bá este în continuare un punct forte – stilul său este unic și se potrivește perfect cu atmosfera suprarealistă a poveștii. Culorile sunt intense, iar unele cadre sunt chiar impresionante. Dar, din păcate, povestea este greu de urmărit pe alocuri. Se sare mult în timp, acțiunea este agitată și nu totul are sens imediat. M-am simțit de mai multe ori confuză și obosită de ritmul haotic.
Ce mi-a lipsit cel mai mult a fost profunzimea emoțională. Deși fiecare personaj are probleme serioase, cumva ele sunt tratate superficial. Dialogurile sunt adesea seci sau absurde, și asta m-a făcut să nu mă pot atașa complet de personaje, chiar dacă ideea din spate este interesantă.
„Dallas” este un volum plin de acțiune, umor negru și idei nebunești, dar nu toată nebunia asta are un impact emoțional puternic. Aș recomanda acest volum celor care iubesc poveștile cu călătorii în timp și echipe de supereroi neobișnuiți, dar cu avertismentul că stilul nu este pentru toată lumea.
The Umbrella Academy: Dallas – Gerard Way & Gabriel Ba (Umbrella Academy, #2)
After reading the first volume of „The Umbrella Academy”, I was curious to see what would happen next with this dysfunctional family of superheroes. So I continued with volume two, „Dallas”, which takes the story in an even more chaotic direction, full of time paradoxes, bizarre characters, and bloody confrontations. Although it has some interesting moments, I can’t say it completely won me over – hence the three stars.
The story continues with the Hargreeves siblings trying to recover after the disaster in the first volume. Number Five, who can travel through time, is the main character this time, and we learn more about his past and the mysterious organization he once worked for – the Commission. I enjoyed following him, especially since he’s a child in an adult body but has the mind of a seasoned assassin. He’s forced to travel back in time to ensure… the assassination of JFK. Yes, it sounds crazy – and it really is.
The other members of the Umbrella Academy are in pretty rough shape. Kraken wants to be the leader but seems lost. Spaceboy is still struggling with his weight and the feeling that he no longer has a purpose. Rumor has an interesting side story but isn’t very present, and Séance, with his ability to talk to the dead, provides the weirdest – and sometimes funniest – moments.
New characters also appear, like Hazel and Cha-Cha – two masked assassins dressed like mascots, who are so absurd and violent that they’re almost comical. I can’t say they convinced me – at times, they feel like they belong in a different story, and their presence takes away from the emotional weight I was hoping for.
The artwork by Gabriel Bá is still a strong point – his style is unique and fits the surreal atmosphere of the story perfectly. The colors are intense, and some panels are truly impressive. But unfortunately, the story is hard to follow at times. There’s a lot of time-jumping, the action is frantic, and not everything makes sense right away. I often felt confused and tired by the chaotic pace.
What I missed most was emotional depth. Even though each character has serious issues, somehow they’re treated superficially. The dialogue is often flat or absurd, which made it hard for me to truly connect with the characters, even if the concept behind them is interesting.
„Dallas” is a volume full of action, dark humor, and crazy ideas, but not all that madness has a strong emotional impact. I’d recommend it to those who love time travel stories and unusual superhero teams, but with a warning – the style isn’t for everyone.
