„Iubitul” de Freida McFadden este o poveste care m-a ținut cu sufletul la gură și, în același timp, mi-a dat fiori. Deși am bănuit unele lucruri din timp, tot am fost prinsă în poveste și în jocul periculos dintre dragoste și minciună.
Personajul principal este Sydney Shaw, o femeie singură din New York, care a avut parte numai de întâlniri eșuate: bărbați care mint, care o plictisesc sau care nu știu ce înseamnă respectul. Așa că atunci când îl cunoaște pe Tom, pare că totul se schimbă. Este frumos, atent, politicos și, pe deasupra, medic! Sydney simte că, în sfârșit, a dat peste bărbatul visurilor ei.
Relația lor se leagă rapid, iar ea începe să-și imagineze un viitor alături de el. Însă, pe măsură ce timpul trece, apar mici detalii care nu se leagă. Tom este uneori prea perfect, alteori pare că ascunde ceva. Iar când una dintre prietenele lui Sydney este găsită ucisă cu brutalitate, lucrurile iau o turnură întunecată. Se pare că există un criminal care seduce femeile, le câștigă încrederea, apoi le omoară. Sydney ar trebui să fie în siguranță… nu?
Dar ceva din instinctul ei îi spune că nu cunoaște cu adevărat bărbatul de lângă ea. Și începe să se teamă. De trecutul lui. De reacțiile lui. De faptul că ar putea fi următoarea victimă. M-a prins atmosfera tensionată, dar mai ales gândurile contradictorii ale lui Sydney: dorința de a iubi, de a avea încredere, și frica sâcâitoare că a greșit alegerea.
Freida McFadden scrie cu multă tensiune psihologică. Mi-a plăcut cât de reală a fost nesiguranța lui Sydney, cum a trecut de la îndrăgosteală la teamă. Sunt și fragmente din perspectiva lui Tom – și acelea sunt chiar tulburătoare, te fac să te întrebi dacă iubirea lui e reală sau dacă ascunde o dorință întunecată.
„Iubitul” nu este doar un thriller romantic. Este un avertisment despre pericolele încrederii oarbe, mai ales în lumea întâlnirilor online. M-a făcut să mă gândesc cât de bine putem cunoaște pe cineva, mai ales când ne dorim cu disperare să iubim.
I-am dat patru stele pentru că, deși povestea este intensă și captivantă, unele momente mi s-au părut ușor previzibile. Aș fi vrut un final puțin mai puternic, ceva care să mă lase cu adevărat șocată. Dar chiar și așa, a fost o lectură plină de suspans, pe care am devorat-o în doar câteva ore.
Dacă îți plac thrillerele psihologice în care dragostea poate deveni o capcană mortală, atunci „Iubitul” este exact ce trebuie să citești.

„The Boyfriend” by Freida McFadden is a story that kept me on the edge of my seat while also sending chills down my spine. Even though I suspected some things early on, I was still completely caught up in the plot and the dangerous game between love and lies.
The main character is Sydney Shaw, a single woman living in New York who’s only had failed dates—men who lie, bore her, or have no idea what respect means. So when she meets Tom, everything seems to change. He’s handsome, thoughtful, polite, and on top of that, a doctor! Sydney feels like she’s finally found the man of her dreams.
Their relationship progresses quickly, and she starts imagining a future with him. But as time goes on, little things start to feel off. Sometimes Tom seems too perfect, other times like he’s hiding something. And when one of Sydney’s friends is found brutally murdered, things take a dark turn. It appears there’s a killer out there who seduces women, gains their trust, then kills them. Sydney should be safe… right?
But something in her gut tells her she doesn’t really know the man beside her. And she starts to feel afraid—of his past, of his reactions, of the possibility that she could be his next victim. I was drawn in by the tense atmosphere, but even more so by Sydney’s conflicting thoughts: her desire to love and trust, and the nagging fear that she’s made a terrible mistake.
Freida McFadden writes with intense psychological tension. I loved how real Sydney’s uncertainty felt—how she shifted from being in love to being scared. There are also chapters from Tom’s perspective—and those are truly unsettling, making you wonder if his love is genuine or hiding something dark.
„The Boyfriend” isn’t just a romantic thriller. It’s a warning about the dangers of blind trust, especially in the world of online dating. It made me think about how well we can really know someone—especially when we’re desperate to fall in love.
I gave it four stars because, while the story is intense and gripping, some parts felt a little predictable. I would’ve liked a slightly stronger ending—something that really shocked me. Still, it was a suspenseful read that I devoured in just a few hours.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers where love can become a deadly trap, then „The Boyfriend” is exactly what you should read.
