„Cu cărțile pe față” de Agatha Christie este o carte care mi-a trezit sentimente amestecate. Am citit-o cu interes, mai ales pentru că îl are în centru pe celebrul detectiv Hercule Poirot, dar nu pot spune că m-a captivat la fel de mult ca alte romane ale autoarei.
Totul începe cu o invitație la cină, organizată de un personaj misterios și excentric, domnul Shaitana. El adună în jurul mesei patru detectivi și patru oameni despre care el susține că au comis crime în trecut, dar nu au fost niciodată prinși. La prima vedere, pare o simplă seară de jocuri de cărți, dar lucrurile iau o întorsătură neașteptată: gazda este găsită moartă în timpul serii.
De aici începe ancheta, iar Poirot, ajutat de prietenii săi – colonelul Race, Ariadne Oliver (o scriitoare amuzantă și cam excentrică) și comisarul Battle – încearcă să afle cine dintre cei patru invitați „suspecți” este criminalul. Ce mi s-a părut interesant a fost că accentul nu a fost pus pe probe fizice sau alibiuri, ci mai mult pe comportamentele și personalitățile celor implicați.
Personajele suspecte sunt destul de diferite: un doctor calm și rezervat (doctorul Roberts), o doamnă elegantă cu un trecut dubios (doamna Lorrimer), un ofițer retras (maiorul Despard) și o tânără care pare nevinovată, dar ascunde multe (Anne Meredith). Fiecare are o poveste care ar putea ascunde un adevăr întunecat.
Totuși, chiar dacă ideea mi s-a părut originală – o crimă comisă „la vedere”, dar într-un cadru închis, cu un număr limitat de suspecți –, ritmul cărții mi s-a părut lent pe alocuri. Am simțit că multe pagini sunt doar discuții lungi între Poirot și ceilalți detectivi, fără prea multă acțiune. Mi-a lipsit tensiunea care de obicei mă ține cu sufletul la gură în romanele Agathei Christie.
Finalul e, ca de obicei, inteligent și bine gândit, dar nu a avut același impact ca în alte cărți. De data aceasta, nu am simțit acea surpriză uriașă la dezvăluirea criminalului. Poate pentru că totul s-a bazat prea mult pe analiza psihologică, nu pe indicii clare.
Per total, „Cu cărțile pe față” este o lectură interesantă, dar nu printre favoritele mele din seria cu Hercule Poirot. Are idei bune și un concept original, dar mi-ar fi plăcut mai mult dinamism și mai mult suspans. O recomand celor care preferă misterele mai „liniștite”, bazate pe deducție și dialog, dar nu e cea mai bună alegere dacă vrei o poveste plină de acțiune sau răsturnări spectaculoase de situație.

„Cards on the Table” by Agatha Christie is a book that left me with mixed feelings. I read it with interest, especially because it features the famous detective Hercule Poirot, but I can’t say it captivated me as much as some of the author’s other novels.
It all starts with a dinner invitation organized by a mysterious and eccentric character, Mr. Shaitana. He gathers around the table four detectives and four people whom he claims have committed murders in the past but were never caught. At first glance, it seems like a simple evening of card games, but things take an unexpected turn when the host is found dead during the event.
That’s when the investigation begins, and Poirot, helped by his friends – Colonel Race, Ariadne Oliver (a funny and slightly eccentric writer), and Superintendent Battle – tries to figure out which of the four “suspect” guests is the killer. What I found interesting was that the focus wasn’t on physical evidence or alibis, but rather on the behaviors and personalities of those involved.
The suspects are quite different: a calm and reserved doctor (Dr. Roberts), an elegant lady with a shady past (Mrs. Lorrimer), a withdrawn officer (Major Despard), and a young woman who seems innocent but hides a lot (Anne Meredith). Each of them has a story that could conceal a dark truth.
Still, although I thought the idea was original – a murder committed “in plain sight” but in a closed setting with a limited number of suspects – the pace of the book felt slow at times. I felt like many pages were just long conversations between Poirot and the other detectives, without much action. I missed the tension that usually keeps me on the edge of my seat in Agatha Christie’s novels.
The ending is, as always, clever and well thought-out, but it didn’t have the same impact as in other books. This time, I didn’t feel that huge surprise at the reveal of the murderer. Maybe because everything relied too much on psychological analysis rather than on clear clues.
Overall, „Cards on the Table” is an interesting read, but not among my favorites in the Hercule Poirot series. It has good ideas and an original concept, but I would have liked more dynamism and suspense. I recommend it to those who enjoy quieter mysteries based on deduction and dialogue, but it’s not the best choice if you’re looking for a story full of action or spectacular plot twists.
