„Credence” de Penelope Douglas este o carte intensă, diferită de ceea ce citesc de obicei, dar care, din păcate, nu a reușit să mă cucerească pe deplin. Povestea o urmărește pe Tiernan, o adolescentă care, după pierderea părinților, ajunge să locuiască într-un loc izolat din munți, alături de trei bărbați: Jake, Noah și Kaleb. De aici începe o poveste complicată, plină de tensiuni, emoții contradictorii și relații greu de definit.
Tiernan este un personaj care m-a făcut să simt mai multă compasiune decât atașament. Este pierdută, confuză și pare că nu își găsește locul nicăieri. Deși uneori mi-a fost greu să înțeleg alegerile ei, am apreciat faptul că autoarea ne oferă acces la gândurile și trăirile ei, ceea ce o face mai umană. Cei trei bărbați din jurul ei sunt foarte diferiți: Jake este figura autoritară și protectoare, Noah este mai deschis și mai cald, iar Kaleb este misterios, retras și greu de descifrat. Relațiile dintre ei sunt complicate și încărcate de tensiune, iar interacțiunile lor cu Tiernan sunt, de multe ori, intense și controversate.
Acțiunea se desfășoară într-un decor izolat, iar descrierile peisajelor au fost, sincer, una dintre părțile mele preferate. Munții, frigul, liniștea apăsătoare, toate acestea sunt descrise într-un mod care te face să simți atmosfera și să te pierzi puțin în acel loc. Se vede că autoarea a pus multă atenție în construirea cadrului, iar asta ajută mult la crearea unei stări aparte.
În ceea ce privește personajele, chiar dacă nu toate mi-au plăcut, nu pot nega că sunt bine construite. Fiecare are propriul trecut, propriile frustrări și nesiguranțe, iar aceste lucruri sunt explorate destul de detaliat. Mi-a plăcut că nu sunt personaje superficiale, dimpotrivă, sunt complexe și, uneori, chiar greu de înțeles. Autoarea ne oferă bucăți din trecutul lor, explicând de ce sunt așa cum sunt, ceea ce adaugă profunzime poveștii.
Totuși, trebuie să recunosc că acest tip de relație, reverse harem, nu este pe gustul meu. Este a doua carte de acest gen pe care o citesc și, din nou, nu m-a convins. Simt că nu rezonez cu acest trope și, oricât aș încerca, nu reușesc să mă implic emoțional în astfel de dinamici. Nu spun că este ceva greșit cu povestea în sine, ci doar că, pentru mine, nu funcționează.
Per total, „Credence” este o carte care are puncte forte clare: atmosfera, descrierile și complexitatea personajelor, dar și elemente care nu au fost pe placul meu. A fost o experiență de lectură interesantă, dar nu una care să mă facă să o iubesc. Îi ofer trei stele, mai ales pentru felul în care autoarea a construit lumea și personajele, chiar dacă povestea, în ansamblu, nu a fost pentru mine.

“Credence” by Penelope Douglas is an intense book, different from what I usually read, but unfortunately it didn’t fully win me over. The story follows Tiernan, a teenager who, after losing her parents, ends up living in an isolated place in the mountains alongside three men: Jake, Noah, and Kaleb. From here begins a complicated story, full of tension, conflicting emotions, and relationships that are hard to define.
Tiernan is a character who made me feel more compassion than attachment. She is lost, confused, and seems unable to find her place anywhere. Although at times it was hard for me to understand her choices, I appreciated that the author gives us access to her thoughts and feelings, which makes her more human. The three men around her are very different: Jake is the authoritative and protective figure, Noah is more open and warm, and Kaleb is mysterious, withdrawn, and hard to read. The relationships between them are complicated and filled with tension, and their interactions with Tiernan are often intense and controversial.
The action takes place in an isolated setting, and honestly, the landscape descriptions were one of my favorite parts. The mountains, the cold, the heavy silence—all of these are described in a way that makes you feel the atmosphere and get a little lost in that place. It’s clear the author paid a lot of attention to building the setting, and that really helps create a unique mood.
As for the characters, even if I didn’t like all of them, I can’t deny they are well developed. Each has their own past, frustrations, and insecurities, and these aspects are explored in quite a lot of detail. I liked that they aren’t superficial—on the contrary, they are complex and sometimes even difficult to understand. The author gives us pieces of their past, explaining why they are the way they are, which adds depth to the story.
However, I have to admit that this type of relationship—the reverse harem—is not to my taste. It’s the second book of this kind that I’ve read and, once again, it didn’t convince me. I feel like I don’t resonate with this trope, and no matter how much I try, I can’t get emotionally involved in these kinds of dynamics. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with the story itself, just that it doesn’t work for me.
Overall, “Credence” is a book with clear strengths: the atmosphere, the descriptions, and the complexity of the characters, but also elements that didn’t appeal to me. It was an interesting reading experience, but not one that made me love it. I’m giving it three stars, mainly for the way the author built the world and the characters, even if the story as a whole wasn’t for me.
