Am început „Pacientul de sâmbătă seara” cu așteptări destul de mari, mai ales că în centrul poveștii se află Dr. Lisa Dumitrache, psihiatru, un personaj care ar fi putut oferi multă profunzime prin prisma meseriei sale. Ideea unui caz special, apărut într-o seară de sâmbătă, promitea mister și tensiune psihologică. Din păcate, pentru mine, totul a rămas la nivel de promisiune.
Cartea este foarte scurtă, iar acest lucru afectează serios construcția personajelor. Dr. Lisa Dumitrache este prezentată mai mult prin prisma rolului ei profesional, însă dincolo de această etichetă nu ajungem să o cunoaștem cu adevărat. Nu aflăm suficient despre frământările ei, despre trecutul sau vulnerabilitățile sale. Totul este schițat, dar nu dezvoltat. La fel se întâmplă și cu pacientul, care ar trebui să fie elementul central al tensiunii. Este prezent, dar vag conturat, fără o construcție solidă care să mă facă să simt cu adevărat gravitatea situației.
Am simțit că personajele nu au avut loc să se dezvolte. Apar, spun câteva replici sau sunt implicate într-o scenă, apoi povestea sare mai departe. Nu există acel proces lent prin care să le descoperi treptat, să le înțelegi motivațiile sau conflictele interioare. Totul este foarte sumar.
Acțiunea mi s-a părut grăbită și fragmentată. Se trece brusc de la o scenă la alta, fără suficiente detalii de legătură. Uneori aveam impresia că citesc un rezumat al unei povești mai ample, nu povestea în sine. În loc să se construiască tensiunea pas cu pas, evenimentele se succed rapid, dar fără impact emoțional real.
Pentru un thriller psihologic, suspansul și atmosfera ar trebui să fie esențiale. Din păcate, aici nu am simțit aproape deloc acel fior specific genului. Nu am fost ținută în tensiune, nu am avut momente în care să simt neliniște sau curiozitate intensă. Situațiile care ar fi putut deveni dramatice nu au fost suficient dezvoltate încât să mă afecteze.
Per total, pentru mine, a fost o lectură foarte slabă. Ideea de a construi povestea în jurul unui psihiatru și al unui pacient problematic avea potențial, însă execuția nu m-a convins. Mi-aș fi dorit mai multă profunzime, mai multă atenție la detalii și o construcție mai solidă a tensiunii. A rămas senzația unei povești neterminate, care ar fi avut nevoie de mai mult spațiu pentru a deveni memorabilă. Din păcate, este o carte căreia îi pot oferi doar o stea.
The Saturday Night Patient – Beatrice Seres
I started “The Saturday Night Patient” with fairly high expectations, especially since the story centers on Dr. Lisa Dumitrache, a psychiatrist — a character who could have offered a lot of depth through the lens of her profession. The idea of a special case appearing on a Saturday night promised mystery and psychological tension. Unfortunately, for me, it remained only a promise.
The book is very short, and this seriously affects the development of the characters. Dr. Lisa Dumitrache is presented mainly through her professional role, but beyond that label, we never truly get to know her. We don’t learn enough about her inner struggles, her past, or her vulnerabilities. Everything is sketched out, but never fully developed. The same happens with the patient, who should be the central element of the tension. He is present, but vaguely outlined, without a solid construction that would make me truly feel the gravity of the situation.
I felt that the characters didn’t have room to grow. They appear, say a few lines or take part in a scene, and then the story quickly moves on. There isn’t that gradual process of discovering them step by step, of understanding their motivations or inner conflicts. Everything feels very brief and superficial.
The action seemed rushed and fragmented. The story jumps abruptly from one scene to another, without enough connecting details. At times, I had the impression that I was reading a summary of a longer story, not the story itself. Instead of building tension step by step, the events unfold quickly, but without real emotional impact.
For a psychological thriller, suspense and atmosphere should be essential. Unfortunately, I barely felt that specific thrill of the genre. I wasn’t kept on edge, nor did I experience moments of deep unease or intense curiosity. Situations that could have become dramatic were not developed enough to truly affect me.
Overall, for me, it was a very weak read. The idea of building the story around a psychiatrist and a troubled patient had potential, but the execution didn’t convince me. I would have liked more depth, more attention to detail, and a stronger build-up of tension. It ultimately felt like an unfinished story that needed more space to become memorable. Unfortunately, it’s a book I can only give one star.
