„Dragă cititorule” este primul volum dintr-o serie mystery romance semnată de Tate James, autoare devenită extrem de populară pe TikTok. Cartea merge pe ideea „de ce să alegi doar unul?”, combinând atmosfera de dark academia cu romantism intens, scene îndrăznețe și un fir narativ construit ca un mic thriller de campus.
Am început această carte fără să știu exact la ce să mă aștept. Titlul m-a intrigat, descrierea părea promițătoare, dar fiind prima mea experiență cu trope-ul reverse harem, am fost luată prin surprindere. Nu pot spune că m-a cucerit din prima această dinamică. Încă nu sunt convinsă că este pe gustul meu, însă sunt dispusă să-i mai dau o șansă în viitor, poate cu alte personaje sau într-un alt tip de poveste.
Totul începe când protagonista, Ashley, primește o bursă la prestigioasa Universitate Nevaeh. La prima vedere, pare un cadou perfect, o oportunitate rară, o șansă la un viitor mai bun. Doar că, așa cum spune și ea ironic, uneori „calul de dar” vine cu surprize neplăcute. În cazul ei, surpriza apare sub forma noului frate vitreg și a grupului lui de prieteni: patru tineri bogați, influenți și extrem de siguri pe ei. Sunt genul de băieți care au fost obișnuiți toată viața să primească totul fără să li se refuze nimic. Au deja o părere formată despre ea înainte să o cunoască și nu se sfiesc să o trateze cu superioritate.
Ashley încearcă să rămână matură și să-i ignore. Și, la început, pare că reușește. Însă lucrurile scapă rapid de sub control când intră în scenă o societate secretă din campus, Devil’s Backbone. De aici începe adevărata tensiune: probe de inițiere periculoase, răpiri, petreceri haotice, provocări nebunești și recompense tentante. Atmosfera devine tot mai întunecată, iar misterul legat de societate și de moartea unor studenți din anii anteriori mi-a menținut interesul ridicat. Acesta a fost, pentru mine, cel mai puternic element al cărții. Voiam să aflu ce se ascunde în spatele acelor ritualuri și cât de adâncă este corupția din universitate.
Pe partea romantică, relațiile sunt intense, tensionate și destul de dramatice. Există atracție, gelozie, confruntări și momente furate care complică totul. Totuși, pe alocuri, personajele mi s-au părut destul de copilăroase în reacții. Deși sunt studenți la universitate, comportamentul lor m-a dus mai degrabă cu gândul la un young adult cu accente new adult. Mi-ar fi plăcut mai multă maturitate emoțională și mai multă profunzime în anumite conflicte.
Stilul este alert, ușor de citit, cu multe dialoguri și scene menite să șocheze sau să creeze suspans. Scenele spicy sunt prezente și adaugă intensitate, dar pentru mine nu ele au fost punctul forte, ci misterul din fundal. Ideea că tot ce se întâmplă este doar începutul unui „calvar” mai mare m-a făcut să rămân curioasă.
Per total, pentru mine a fost o lectură de trei stele. Nu m-a dat pe spate, dar nici nu m-a plictisit. A avut un mister suficient de captivant încât să mă țină prinsă în poveste și o atmosferă dark academia bine conturată. Chiar dacă trope-ul „de ce să alegi doar unul?” nu m-a convins pe deplin, sunt deschisă să-i mai dau o șansă pe viitor, ca să-mi dau seama dacă a fost doar momentul nepotrivit sau pur și simplu nu este genul meu.

“Dear Reader” is the first volume in a mystery romance series by Tate James, an author who has become extremely popular on TikTok. The book follows the “why choose just one?” concept, blending a dark academia atmosphere with intense romance, bold scenes, and a narrative thread built like a small campus thriller.
I started this book not really knowing what to expect. The title intrigued me, the blurb sounded promising, but since it was my first experience with the reverse harem trope, it definitely caught me off guard. I can’t say this dynamic won me over right away. I’m still not entirely convinced it’s my thing, though I’m willing to give it another chance in the future—maybe with different characters or in a different type of story.
Everything begins when the protagonist, Ashley, receives a scholarship to the prestigious Nevaeh University. At first glance, it seems like the perfect gift—a rare opportunity and a chance at a better future. But as she ironically notes, sometimes a “gift horse” comes with unpleasant surprises. In her case, that surprise takes the form of her new stepbrother and his group of friends: four wealthy, influential, and extremely self-assured young men. They’re the kind of boys who’ve been used to getting everything they want without ever being told no. They already have a preconceived opinion about her before truly knowing her, and they don’t hesitate to treat her with superiority.
Ashley tries to stay mature and ignore them. At first, it seems like she manages. But things quickly spiral out of control when a secret campus society, Devil’s Backbone, enters the picture. That’s when the real tension begins: dangerous initiation trials, kidnappings, chaotic parties, reckless challenges, and tempting rewards. The atmosphere grows darker and darker, and the mystery surrounding the society—as well as the deaths of students in previous years—kept my interest high. For me, this was the strongest element of the book. I wanted to uncover what was hidden behind those rituals and how deep the corruption within the university truly ran.
On the romantic side, the relationships are intense, tense, and fairly dramatic. There’s attraction, jealousy, confrontations, and stolen moments that complicate everything. Still, at times the characters felt somewhat childish in their reactions. Even though they are university students, their behavior often reminded me more of a young adult story with new adult undertones. I would have liked to see more emotional maturity and greater depth in certain conflicts.
The writing style is fast-paced and easy to read, with plenty of dialogue and scenes meant to shock or create suspense. The spicy scenes are present and add intensity, but for me they weren’t the highlight—the mystery in the background was. The sense that everything happening is only the beginning of a much larger “ordeal” kept me curious.
Overall, for me, this was a three-star read. It didn’t blow me away, but it didn’t bore me either. It had a sufficiently gripping mystery to keep me engaged and a well-crafted dark academia atmosphere. Even though the “why choose just one?” trope didn’t fully convince me, I’m open to giving it another chance in the future—just to see whether it was simply the wrong timing or if it’s truly not my genre.
