„Favoriții” de Layne Fargo este genul acela de carte care nu e doar o poveste de dragoste. Este o obsesie. Una care te prinde încet, apoi nu-ți mai dă drumul. Pentru mine, a fost o lectură care m-a consumat complet, care m-a făcut să simt căldura reflectoarelor, emoția competiției și fiorul acelor momente în care totul se poate pierde într-o singură secundă.
În centrul poveștii se află Katarina Shaw, o fată fără un nume celebru, fără bani, fără susținere. Tot ce are este ambiția. O ambiție uriașă și convingerea că este destinată să ajungă la Jocurile Olimpice. Katarina este hotărâtă să-și croiască propriul drum, indiferent de obstacole. Nu așteaptă să fie salvată de nimeni. Muncește, luptă, cade și se ridică. Este un personaj puternic, dar și fragil, cu traume din copilărie care o urmăresc și o fac să se agațe cu disperare de visul ei.
Apoi apare Heath Rocha, băiatul singuratic crescut în sistemul de plasament, cu un trecut dur și o privire care spune mai mult decât o mie de cuvinte. Întâlnirea lor schimbă totul. Conexiunea dintre ei este instantanee, aproape magnetică. Pe gheață devin un duo imposibil de ignorat. În afara ei, relația lor este la fel de intensă, uneori frumoasă, alteori toxică, dar mereu vie. Se iubesc cu o forță care îi leagă și îi distruge în același timp.
Drumul lor nu este deloc ușor. Îi urmărim cum trec prin accidentări dureroase, prin lipsa banilor, prin antrenamente epuizante și prin competiții în care fiecare greșeală costă enorm. Vedem rivali care îi privesc cu invidie, oameni care încearcă să-i saboteze, bârfe care le urmăresc fiecare pas. Spiritul de competiție este redat atât de bine, încât simți presiunea fiecărei note, a fiecărei ridicări pe gheață, a fiecărei căderi.
Ceea ce mi-a plăcut enorm este felul în care autoarea construiește povestea ca pe un documentar. La zece ani după finalul lor șocant de la Jocurile Olimpice, un documentar neautorizat reaprinde fascinația publicului pentru Shaw și Rocha. Interviuri, declarații, titluri senzaționale, fragmente din presă, totul pare atât de real, încât la un moment dat aveam impresia că citesc o carte de nonficțiune. Ca și cum aș urmări un caz celebru, analizat și întors pe toate fețele. Iar Katarina, care refuză să fie redusă la versiunea altora, decide să-și spună propria poveste. Și adevărul ei este mult mai complex și mai dureros decât zvonurile.
Mi-a plăcut mult și dinamica lor pe gheață, acel dans care era, de fapt, povestea lor. Apropiere și respingere. Dorință și frică. Momente în care păreau că zboară și altele în care se prăbușeau, doar ca să se prindă din nou unul pe altul. Relația lor este obsesivă, intensă, plină de sacrificii. Nu este o iubire liniștită, ci una care arde. O iubire în care „tu ești casa mea” nu este doar o declarație frumoasă, ci o nevoie disperată de a aparține cuiva.
Personajele sunt construite incredibil de bine. Sunt realiste, imperfecte, umane. Greșesc. Mint. Se rănesc. Iubesc prea mult. Și tocmai de aceea sunt atât de credibile. Le-am simțit durerea, gelozia, dorința de a fi cei mai buni. Am înțeles de ce se agață unul de celălalt chiar și atunci când poate ar trebui să plece.
Cartea aceasta este mai mult decât o poveste de dragoste. Este despre ambiție dusă la extrem, despre prețul succesului, despre imaginea publică versus adevărul din spatele ușilor închise. Este despre cum lumea adoră să ridice pe cineva pe un piedestal și apoi să-l privească prăbușindu-se. Și este despre o femeie care refuză să lase pe altcineva să-i scrie povestea.
Pentru mine, „Favoriții” a fost o lectură de cinci stele. M-a captivat total, m-a făcut să simt fiecare emoție și m-a ținut cu sufletul la gură până la ultima pagină. Este genul de carte care îți rămâne în minte și care, sincer, are toate șansele să devină noua ta obsesie.

A massive ambition—and the unshakable belief that she is destined for the Olympic Games. Katarina is determined to carve out her own path, no matter the obstacles. She doesn’t wait to be saved. The competitive spirit is portrayed so vividly that you can feel the pressure of every score, every lift on the ice, every fall.
What I absolutely loved is the way the author structures the story like a documentary. Ten years after their shocking Olympic finale, an unauthorized documentary reignites the public’s fascination with Shaw and Rocha. Interviews, statements, sensational headlines, press excerpts—everything feels so real that at times I had the impression I was reading nonfiction. As if I were following a famous case, dissected from every angle. And Katarina, who refuses to be reduced to other people’s versions of her, decides to tell her own story. And her truth is far more complex—and far more painful—than the rumors.
I also loved their dynamic on the ice—that dance which was, in fact, their story. Attraction and rejection. Desire and fear. Moments when they seemed to fly, and others when they crashed, only to catch each other again. Their relationship is obsessive, intense, full of sacrifice. It is not a quiet love, but one that burns. A love in which “you are my home” is not just a beautiful declaration, but a desperate need to belong to someone.
The characters are incredibly well built. They are realistic, imperfect, human. They make mistakes. They lie. They hurt each other. They love too much. And that is exactly why they feel so believable. I felt their pain, their jealousy, their hunger to be the best. I understood why they cling to each other even when maybe they should walk away.
This book is more than a love story. It’s about ambition pushed to the extreme, about the price of success, about public image versus the truth behind closed doors. It’s about how the world loves to place someone on a pedestal—and then watch them fall. And it’s about a woman who refuses to let anyone else write her story.
For me, “The Favorites” was a five-star read. It completely captivated me, made me feel every emotion, and kept me breathless until the very last page. It’s the kind of book that lingers in your mind—and honestly, it has every chance of becoming your next obsession.
