„Lasă-mă în urmă” de K. M. Moronova a fost pentru mine o surpriză deosebită. Este prima mea întâlnire cu autoarea și, în același timp, prima dată când citesc un military romance, mai ales unul dark. Am intrat în poveste fără să știu la ce să mă aștept și am ieșit cu inima strânsă și cu senzația că am trăit ceva intens.
Nell Gallows este singura supraviețuitoare a brigăzii de elită Dark Forces, Riøt, după un atac devastator petrecut cu doi ani în urmă. Faptul că a rămas în viață nu este neapărat o binecuvântare, ci mai degrabă o povară. Poartă cu ea vina, trauma și privirile celor care o consideră responsabilă pentru tot ce s-a întâmplat. Tocmai de aceea este aleasă drept candidată pentru Malum, echipa de operațiuni speciale trimisă acolo unde nimeni altcineva nu poate ajunge. O brigadă care rezolvă misiuni imposibile, dar care încă dă vina pe Riøt pentru pierderile dintr-o operațiune eșuată în Patagonia.
Din primul moment am simțit tensiunea. Nell urcă într-un avion spre California știind că, în ochii noilor ei camarazi, este aproape o condamnare la moarte. Știe că nu va fi primită cu brațele deschise. Și, poate pentru că simte că totul se poate termina oricând, decide să își ofere o ultimă noapte de libertate. O aventură de-o noapte. Atât trebuia să fie. Doar că bărbatul întunecat și misterios care o atrage irezistibil nu este un simplu străin. Este Bones. Superiorul ei. Cel mai temut om de pe teren. Diavolul de neatins.
Bones este genul de personaj care nu cere respect, îl impune. Este dur, rece, nemilos în misiuni. El nu doar că o urăște pe Nell, dar se asigură că ea simte asta în fiecare privire, în fiecare ordin rostit scurt și tăios. Și totuși, dincolo de ura lui, se simte o rană adâncă. Mi-a plăcut enorm cum autoarea a construit această dinamică: doi oameni obligați să lupte împreună, dar încărcați de resentimente și vinovății.
Acțiunea este dură și nu este deloc îndulcită. Sunt misiuni care se termină în sânge, decizii luate în fracțiuni de secundă și situații în care binele și răul nu mai sunt atât de clare. Personajele fac alegeri discutabile, de o moralitate îndoielnică, iar asta poate fi dificil pentru cititorii care nu sunt obișnuiți cu partea întunecată a acestui gen. Dar tocmai această zonă gri mi s-a părut autentică. Vorbim despre oameni antrenați să ucidă, despre operațiuni clasice ale forțelor speciale, unde emoțiile sunt împinse la margine pentru a supraviețui.
Un moment care m-a marcat a fost misiunea eșuată în urma căreia Bones nu ajunge la punctul de extracție. În mod normal, regulile sunt clare: pleci. Te salvezi. Dar Nell alege să rămână. Rămâne în urmă cu diavolul și cu secretele lui. În acel punct, ura lor devine secundară. Încep să aibă încredere unul în celălalt doar când nu le mai rămâne nicio altă speranță. Mi s-a părut un moment definitoriu pentru amândoi.
Aproape de final, am fost lovită de un plot twist pe care nu l-am anticipat deloc. Credeam că am înțeles direcția poveștii, dar lucrurile au luat o întorsătură care m-a făcut să recitesc în minte multe detalii. A fost genul acela de revelație care schimbă tot.
Pentru mine, această carte a fost o lectură intensă, uneori inconfortabilă, dar extrem de interesantă. Nu este o poveste de dragoste clasică. Este despre supraviețuire, vină, ură și despre doi oameni care trebuie să poarte o mască de duritate ca să poată trăi cu ceea ce fac în fiecare zi. Dacă sunteți pregătiți pentru un dark military romance care nu menajează și care vă ține cu sufletul la gură, atunci „Lasă-mă în urmă” merită, din punctul meu de vedere, cinci stele.
Leave Me Behind – K. M. Moronova
“Leave Me Behind” by K. M. Moronova was a remarkable surprise for me. It was my first encounter with this author and, at the same time, my first time reading a military romance—especially a dark one. I went into the story not knowing what to expect and came out of it with a tight chest and the feeling that I had lived through something intense.
Nell Gallows is the sole survivor of the elite Dark Forces brigade, Riøt, after a devastating attack two years earlier. Staying alive is not a blessing for her, but rather a burden. She carries guilt, trauma, and the accusing stares of those who consider her responsible for everything that happened. That’s why she is chosen as a candidate for Malum, a special operations team sent where no one else can go. A brigade that handles impossible missions—yet still blames Riøt for the losses suffered during a failed operation in Patagonia.
From the very first moment, I felt the tension. Nell boards a plane to California knowing that, in the eyes of her new comrades, she is almost a death sentence. She knows she won’t be welcomed with open arms. And perhaps because she feels that everything could end at any time, she decides to give herself one last night of freedom. A one-night stand. That’s all it was supposed to be. Except the dark and mysterious man she finds irresistibly drawn to isn’t a stranger at all. He’s Bones. Her superior. The most feared man in the field. The untouchable devil.
Bones is the kind of character who doesn’t ask for respect—he commands it. He is harsh, cold, ruthless in missions. Not only does he hate Nell, but he makes sure she feels it in every glance, every short, sharp order he gives. And yet, beneath his hatred, there’s a deep wound. I absolutely loved how the author built this dynamic: two people forced to fight side by side, weighed down by resentment and guilt.
The action is brutal and not softened in any way. Missions end in blood, decisions are made in split seconds, and there are moments when right and wrong are no longer clear. The characters make questionable choices, morally gray ones, and that may be difficult for readers who aren’t used to the darker side of this genre. But that gray area felt authentic to me. We’re talking about people trained to kill, about classic special forces operations where emotions are pushed aside in order to survive.
One moment that deeply marked me was the failed mission after which Bones doesn’t make it to the extraction point. Normally, the rules are clear: you leave. You save yourself. But Nell chooses to stay. She stays behind with the devil and his secrets. At that point, their hatred becomes secondary. They begin to trust each other only when there is no other hope left. It felt like a defining moment for both of them.
Near the end, I was hit by a plot twist I absolutely did not see coming. I thought I understood where the story was heading, but things took a turn that made me mentally revisit so many details. It was the kind of revelation that changes everything.
For me, this book was an intense, sometimes uncomfortable, but incredibly compelling read. It’s not a classic love story. It’s about survival, guilt, hatred, and two people who have to wear masks of toughness in order to live with what they do every single day. If you’re ready for a dark military romance that doesn’t hold back and keeps you breathless, then “Leave Me Behind” absolutely deserves five stars, in my opinion.
