„Șarpele și aripile nopții” de Carissa Broadbent este genul de carte care, pentru mine, a început timid, dar s-a transformat într-o experiență de cinci stele pe care nu o voi uita prea curând. Deși la început mi-a fost destul de greu să mă conectez cu povestea, iar în mintea mea tot apărea gândul că poate nu este momentul potrivit pentru încă o carte cu vampiri, ceva m-a făcut să continui. Și bine am făcut. Pentru că, pe măsură ce am înaintat cu lectura, povestea m-a prins atât de tare încât nu mai aveam răbdare să ajung la final, să aflu cine câștigă competiția și ce soartă îi așteaptă pe cei doi protagoniști.
Cartea ne-o prezintă pe Oraya, o tânără umană crescută în lumea vampirilor. Adoptată de regele vampirilor, Vincent, ea trăiește permanent cu sentimentul că trebuie să fie mai rapidă, mai inteligentă și mai nemiloasă decât toți ceilalți pentru a supraviețui. Oraya nu este o eroină perfectă. Este vulnerabilă, marcată de frică, dar și extrem de ambițioasă. Își dorește putere nu din dorință de glorie, ci din nevoie, pentru că, în lumea în care trăiește, slăbiciunea înseamnă moarte.
Competiția Kejari, un turneu mortal organizat de zeița morții, este centrul acțiunii. Vampiri din toate casele se adună pentru a se lupta în probe crude, pline de capcane și trădări. Fiecare rundă este mai sângeroasă decât precedenta, iar tensiunea crește constant. Mi-a plăcut mult felul în care autoarea descrie aceste confruntări. Am simțit pericolul la fiecare pas, am simțit frica Orayei, dar și determinarea ei de a nu ceda.
Apoi apare Raihn. Misterios, ironic, puternic, dar diferit de ceilalți vampiri printr-o anumită umanitate pe care încearcă să o ascundă. Relația dintre el și Oraya este construită lent, cu replici tăioase, suspiciune și o atracție care crește în mijlocul pericolului. Ce mi-a plăcut mult este că legătura lor nu este doar romantică, ci și una bazată pe alianță și supraviețuire. Nu știi niciodată sigur dacă pot avea încredere unul în celălalt, iar această incertitudine face povestea și mai intensă.
Pe măsură ce am continuat să citesc, m-am trezit tot mai prinsă de intrigă. Dacă la început aveam rețineri, mai târziu citeam cu sufletul la gură. Voiam să știu cine câștigă competiția, ce planuri ascunse există, cine trădează și cine rămâne loial. Ritmul devine din ce în ce mai alert, iar ultimele capitole sunt pur și simplu imposibil de lăsat din mână.
Cele două răsturnări de situație de aproape de final m-au surprins complet. Nu le-am anticipat deloc. Am fost convinsă că am înțeles direcția poveștii, iar autoarea mi-a demonstrat că m-am înșelat. Mi-au plăcut enorm aceste momente pentru că au schimbat tot ce credeam despre personaje și despre echilibrul de putere dintre ele. Au adus un amestec de șoc, emoție și admirație pentru modul în care a fost construită întreaga intrigă.
„Șarpele și aripile nopții” este o poveste despre putere, frică, loialitate și iubire într-o lume în care fiecare alegere poate fi fatală. Este o carte care crește odată cu tine, care te face să treci de la scepticism la entuziasm total. Pentru mine, a fost dovada că uneori trebuie doar să ai puțină răbdare, pentru că dincolo de primele pagini te poate aștepta o poveste care să te cucerească pe deplin.

„The Serpent and the Wings of Night” by Carissa Broadbent is the kind of book that, for me, started off quietly but turned into a five-star experience I won’t forget anytime soon. Although at first I found it fairly hard to connect with the story—and I kept thinking that maybe it just wasn’t the right moment for yet another vampire book—something made me keep going. And I’m so glad I did. Because as I moved further into the story, it pulled me in so completely that I couldn’t wait to reach the end, to find out who would win the competition and what fate awaited the two protagonists.
The book introduces us to Oraya, a young human raised in a world of vampires. Adopted by the vampire king, Vincent, she constantly lives with the feeling that she must be faster, smarter, and more ruthless than everyone else in order to survive. Oraya is not a perfect heroine. She is vulnerable, marked by fear, but also fiercely ambitious. She seeks power not out of a desire for glory, but out of necessity—because in the world she lives in, weakness means death.
The Kejari competition, a deadly tournament organized by the goddess of death, stands at the center of the story. Vampires from all the houses gather to fight in brutal trials filled with traps and betrayals. Each round is bloodier than the last, and the tension keeps rising. I really loved the way the author describes these confrontations. I felt the danger at every step, I felt Oraya’s fear, but also her determination not to give in.
Then Raihn appears. Mysterious, ironic, powerful—but different from the other vampires because of a certain humanity he tries to hide. The relationship between him and Oraya is built slowly, through sharp exchanges, suspicion, and an attraction that grows in the middle of danger. What I appreciated most is that their bond isn’t just romantic—it’s also rooted in alliance and survival. You’re never entirely sure whether they can truly trust each other, and that uncertainty makes the story even more intense.
As I kept reading, I found myself more and more caught up in the intrigue. If at the beginning I had doubts, later on I was reading breathlessly. I wanted to know who would win the competition, what hidden plans were unfolding, who would betray and who would remain loyal. The pace becomes increasingly fast, and the final chapters are simply impossible to put down.
The two twists near the end completely surprised me. I didn’t anticipate them at all. I was convinced I understood where the story was heading, and the author proved me wrong. I absolutely loved those moments because they changed everything I thought I knew about the characters and the balance of power between them. They brought a mix of shock, emotion, and admiration for the way the entire plot was constructed.
„The Serpent and the Wings of Night” is a story about power, fear, loyalty, and love in a world where every choice can be fatal. It’s a book that grows with you, that takes you from skepticism to full-blown enthusiasm. For me, it was proof that sometimes all you need is a little patience—because beyond the first few pages, there might be a story waiting to completely sweep you away.
