„Petrecerea mincinoșilor” de Kelsey Cox a fost genul de carte care nu m-a cucerit din prima cu acțiunea intensă, dar care m-a prins încet și sigur, până în punctul în care nu am mai putut să o las din mână. Mi-a plăcut mult această lectură și m-a bucurat enorm să descopăr un roman de debut scris atât de atent și de captivant. Se simte că autoarea a știut exact ce atmosferă vrea să creeze și a avut răbdarea necesară să o construiască pas cu pas.
Povestea începe într-un cadru care, la suprafață, pare perfect: Sophie Matthews împlinește șaisprezece ani, iar tatăl ei organizează o petrecere exclusivistă într-un conac impunător din Texas Hill, în prezent renovat și devenit locuința lor. Casa, veche și izolată, are un trecut ciudat și o reputație neliniștitoare, iar pe mine m-a făcut să simt din primele pagini că ceva nu este în regulă. Totul este elegant și strălucitor, dar tensiunea se simte în aer, ca o umbră care planează peste invitați.
Prima parte a cărții mi s-a părut esențială pentru construirea tensiunii. Accentul cade pe personaje, pe relațiile dintre ele și pe felul în care trecutul le influențează prezentul. Dani, mama vitregă a lui Sophie, m-a făcut să simt constant neliniștea unei femei care nu se simte niciodată suficient de bună. Órlaith, dădaca irlandeză, aduce o doză de mister prin superstițiile ei și prin sentimentul că această casă ascunde ceva întunecat. Mikayla, cea mai bună prietenă a lui Sophie, m-a surprins cel mai mult, pentru că este mult mai puternică și mai complexă decât pare la prima vedere. Iar Kim, fosta soție, este genul de personaj plin de resentimente, care te face să te întrebi până unde ar putea merge din dorința de răzbunare.
Un lucru care mi-a plăcut enorm a fost structura poveștii. Avem perspective diferite, mai multe voci care spun povestea, iar acțiunea se mută în timp: înainte de petrecere, în timpul ei și după. Acest lucru m-a ținut constant atentă și m-a făcut să analizez fiecare detaliu. Am ajuns să suspectez toate personajele pe rând, pentru că nimeni nu părea complet sincer sau lipsit de vină.
Deși ritmul este mai lent, nu am simțit nicio clipă că mă plictisesc. Din contră, tensiunea crește încet, dar sigur, iar sentimentul de pericol este mereu prezent. Finalul a fost o surpriză totală pentru mine. Nu l-am ghicit, deși am încercat din răsputeri să leg indiciile, iar acest lucru mi-a confirmat cât de bine este construit misterul.
Pentru mine, „Petrecerea mincinoșilor” este o lectură care m-a ținut în suspans mai mult prin atmosferă și psihologia personajelor decât prin acțiune propriu-zisă. Este un debut reușit, o carte care arată multă maturitate narativă și care merită fără îndoială cinci stele. O recomand mai ales celor care iubesc thrillerele lente, tensionate, în care nimeni nu este ceea ce pare.

“Party of Liars” by Kelsey Cox was the kind of book that didn’t win me over right away with fast-paced action, but instead pulled me in slowly and steadily, until I reached the point where I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed this read, and I was genuinely happy to discover such a carefully written and gripping debut novel. You can feel that the author knew exactly what kind of atmosphere she wanted to create and had the patience to build it step by step.
The story begins in a setting that, on the surface, seems perfect: Sophie Matthews is turning sixteen, and her father throws an exclusive party at an imposing mansion in Texas Hill, currently under renovation and now their home. The house—old and isolated—has a strange past and an unsettling reputation, and from the very first pages it made me feel that something wasn’t right. Everything is elegant and dazzling, yet tension hangs in the air like a shadow looming over the guests.
I found the first part of the book essential for building tension. The focus is on the characters, their relationships, and the way the past influences the present. Dani, Sophie’s stepmother, constantly made me feel the unease of a woman who never feels good enough. Órlaith, the Irish nanny, adds a layer of mystery through her superstitions and the sense that the house is hiding something dark. Mikayla, Sophie’s best friend, surprised me the most—she is far stronger and more complex than she seems at first glance. And Kim, the ex-wife, is the kind of resentment-filled character who makes you wonder how far she might go in her desire for revenge.
One thing I absolutely loved was the structure of the story. We get different perspectives, multiple voices telling the story, and the action moves through time: before the party, during it, and after. This kept me constantly engaged and made me analyze every detail. I ended up suspecting every character in turn, because no one seemed completely honest or free of guilt.
Even though the pace is slower, I never felt bored for a moment. On the contrary, the tension builds gradually but steadily, and the sense of danger is always present. The ending was a total surprise for me. I didn’t guess it, no matter how hard I tried to connect the clues, and that only confirmed how well the mystery is constructed.
For me, “Party of Liars” is a read that kept me in suspense more through atmosphere and character psychology than through outright action. It’s a successful debut, a novel that shows a great deal of narrative maturity and undoubtedly deserves five stars. I especially recommend it to those who love slow-burn, tense thrillers where no one is quite what they seem.
