„Nesolicitatele sfaturi despre crime ale celebrei Vera Wong” de Jesse Q. Sutanto este o carte care mi-a adus zâmbete, suspans și o doză neașteptată de emoție. Este genul de roman care te prinde nu doar prin misterul pe care îl ascunde, ci și prin farmecul personajului principal – o femeie în vârstă care refuză să fie ignorată de lume. I-am dat patru stele, pentru că, deși povestea este plină de umor și căldură, pe alocuri am simțit că îi lipsește ceva, dar per total rămâne o lectură foarte plăcută.
Vera Wong este o văduvă de origine chineză care trăiește în San Francisco și deține un mic magazin de ceaiuri, Vera Wang’s World-Famous Teahouse (deși numele este puțin exagerat, cum recunoaște chiar ea). Viața ei este liniștită și puțin monotonă, până într-o dimineață când găsește un bărbat mort pe podeaua ceainăriei sale. În loc să sune pur și simplu la poliție și să aștepte, Vera decide că poate ea ar trebui să rezolve cazul. Pentru că, după cum spune ea, poliția oricum nu face treabă ca lumea. Așa începe una dintre cele mai amuzante și neobișnuite „anchete” pe care le-am citit.
Ce mi-a plăcut cel mai mult este felul în care Vera se bagă în viața tuturor – uneori fără să fie invitată – dar mereu cu intenții bune. Ea îi adună pe toți suspecții în jurul ceaiului și al prăjiturilor, observă fiecare gest, fiecare privire, și trage propriile concluzii. Pe parcurs, ajunge să lege o relație neașteptată cu fiecare dintre ei: cu fratele victimei, cu o tânără artistă timidă, cu un jurnalist cam pierdut și cu o mamă singură care se străduiește să se descurce. Între ei se creează o comunitate frumoasă, care amintește că uneori familiile nu se nasc din sânge, ci din bunătate și grijă.
Vera este un personaj pe care îl iubești și te enervează în același timp. Este încăpățânată, plină de reguli proprii și de convingerea că „ea știe mai bine”, dar tocmai asta o face atât de vie. Mi-a plăcut cum autoarea a îmbinat umorul cu momentele sensibile, cum a arătat vulnerabilitatea din spatele măștii de femeie puternică. În spatele replicilor ironice și al curiozității neobosite, Vera este, de fapt, singură și tânjește după conexiune.
Mi-a plăcut și faptul că povestea nu este doar despre o crimă, ci despre oameni și felul în care se pot vindeca prin prietenie. Totuși, uneori firul misterului pare să treacă în plan secund, iar accentul pe relații face ca ritmul să fie mai lent. De aceea i-am dat patru stele în loc de cinci.
Per total, „Nesolicitatele sfaturi despre crime ale celebrei Vera Wong” este o carte caldă, plină de umor, cu un strop de mister și mult suflet. Este perfectă pentru cei care iubesc romanele cozy mystery, dar și pentru cei care vor o poveste despre curaj, prietenie și redescoperirea de sine – chiar și la o vârstă la care alții ar fi renunțat să mai înceapă ceva nou.

“Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers” by Jesse Q. Sutanto is a book that brought me smiles, suspense, and an unexpected dose of emotion. It’s the kind of story that hooks you not only with its mystery but also with the charm of its main character – an elderly woman who refuses to be ignored by the world. I gave it four stars because, although the story is full of humor and warmth, at times I felt like something was missing. Still, overall, it’s a very enjoyable read.
Vera Wong is a widowed Chinese woman living in San Francisco who owns a small tea shop called Vera Wang’s World-Famous Teahouse (though, as she admits, the name might be a bit of an exaggeration). Her life is calm and somewhat monotonous—until one morning, she finds a dead man on the floor of her teahouse. Instead of simply calling the police and waiting, Vera decides that she should be the one to solve the case. After all, as she says, the police never do their job properly anyway. And that’s how one of the funniest and most unusual “investigations” I’ve ever read begins.
What I liked most is the way Vera inserts herself into everyone’s life—sometimes without being invited—but always with good intentions. She gathers all the suspects around tea and pastries, observes every gesture and glance, and draws her own conclusions. Along the way, she forms unexpected bonds with each of them: the victim’s brother, a shy young artist, a somewhat lost journalist, and a single mother trying to get by. Together, they create a beautiful sense of community that reminds us that sometimes families aren’t formed by blood, but by kindness and care.
Vera is a character you both love and get exasperated with. She’s stubborn, full of her own rules, and absolutely convinced that „she knows best”—but that’s exactly what makes her so alive. I loved how the author blended humor with sensitivity, showing the vulnerability behind the mask of a strong woman. Beneath the witty remarks and relentless curiosity, Vera is actually lonely and craving connection.
I also appreciated that the story isn’t just about a murder—it’s about people and how they can heal through friendship. Still, at times the mystery itself takes a back seat, and the focus on relationships makes the pacing a bit slower. That’s why I rated it four stars instead of five.
Overall, “Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers” is a warm, funny book with a touch of mystery and a lot of heart. It’s perfect for fans of cozy mysteries, but also for anyone who enjoys stories about courage, friendship, and rediscovering oneself—even at an age when most people might have given up on starting something new.
