Unele cărți îți rămân în suflet pentru modul în care îți schimbă perspectiva asupra lumii, iar „Ce preț are un nume” este exact genul acesta de roman. Jodi Picoult reușește să creeze o punte între trecut și prezent, între două femei separate de patru sute de ani, dar unite de aceeași dorință: să-și facă vocea auzită într-o lume care nu le oferă șanse egale.
În prezent, o cunoaștem pe Melina Green, o tânără dramaturgă talentată, dar dezamăgită de industria teatrală modernă, unde bărbații au încă mai multe uși deschise decât femeile. Melina scrie o piesă inspirată din viața strămoașei sale elisabetane, Emilia Bassano – prima poetă publicată din Anglia, considerată de unii adevărata „Doamnă Întunecată” din sonetele lui Shakespeare. Convinsă că nimeni nu îi va lua piesa în serios, Melina se resemnează, dar prietenul ei cel mai bun face un gest riscant: înscrie piesa la un festival, folosind un nume masculin. Partea care m-a cucerit cel mai mult este povestea Emiliei Bassano, plasată în Anglia anului 1581. Crescută sub tutela unor nobili, educată și pasionată de literatură, Emilia are un talent rar, dar trăiește într-o epocă în care o femeie nu are voie să urce pe scenă sau să-și semneze creațiile. Forțată de circumstanțe să devină amanta lordului șambelan, ea descoperă puterea cuvintelor rostite pe scenă. Și atunci îndrăznește un gest care schimbă totul: scrie o piesă și o încredințează unui tânăr actor, William Shakespeare, pentru a o aduce în lumina reflectoarelor.
Romanul explorează cu sensibilitate temele identității, nedreptății și sacrificiului. Mi-a plăcut cum Picoult împletește perfect cele două linii temporale: trecutul bogat în detalii istorice și prezentul plin de tensiune emoțională. M-am simțit transportată în atmosfera Angliei elisabetane – castelele somptuoase, cocioabele modeste, intrigile teatrale – și, în același timp, am simțit frustrarea Melinei, care se confruntă cu aceleași prejudecăți, doar într-o altă formă.
Pentru mine, „Ce preț are un nume” a fost mai mult decât un roman istoric sau un mister literar. Este un omagiu adus femeilor ale căror voci au fost uitate, dar și un memento puternic că lupta pentru egalitate și recunoaștere nu s-a încheiat. M-a făcut să mă întreb câte povești au fost furate de-a lungul timpului și câte nume au rămas necunoscute.
Dacă iubești literatura, teatrul, istoria și poveștile care te emoționează până la lacrimi, această carte nu trebuie ratată. Jodi Picoult a scris o scrisoare de dragoste către artă și adevăr, iar Emilia Bassano este eroina pe care nu o vei uita prea curând. Este, fără îndoială, unul dintre cele mai bune romane ale autoarei și o lectură care îți va rămâne în minte și în inimă mult timp după ce vei închide ultima pagină.

The part that captivated me most is Emilia Bassano’s story, set in 1581 England. Raised under the care of nobles, educated, and passionate about literature, Emilia possesses a rare talent but lives in an era when a woman isn’t allowed to step on stage or sign her work. Forced by circumstances to become the mistress of the Lord Chamberlain, she discovers the power of words spoken on stage. And then she dares to take a step that changes everything: she writes a play and entrusts it to a young actor, William Shakespeare, to bring it to the spotlight.
The novel explores themes of identity, injustice, and sacrifice with great sensitivity. I loved how Picoult perfectly weaves the two timelines: the past, rich in historical detail, and the present, full of emotional tension. I felt transported to the atmosphere of Elizabethan England—the sumptuous castles, the humble cottages, the theatrical intrigues—and at the same time, I felt Melina’s frustration as she faces the same prejudices, just in a different form.
For me, „By Any Other Name” was more than a historical novel or a literary mystery. It’s a tribute to the women whose voices have been forgotten and a powerful reminder that the fight for equality and recognition isn’t over. It made me wonder how many stories have been stolen over time and how many names have remained unknown.
If you love literature, theater, history, and stories that move you to tears, this book is not to be missed. Jodi Picoult has written a love letter to art and truth, and Emilia Bassano is a heroine you won’t forget anytime soon. Without a doubt, it’s one of the author’s best novels and a reading experience that will stay with you—both in your mind and in your heart—long after you close the final page.
