Am citit „Un cuplu perfect” de Ruth Ware cu așteptări mari, mai ales că premisa suna promițător: un reality show numit „Cuplul perfect”, filmat pe o insulă exotică din Oceanul Indian, unde cinci cupluri concurează pentru bani și faimă. Printre concurenți se află și Lyla, o tânără cercetătoare care trece printr-un moment dificil în carieră și care acceptă să intre în joc doar pentru a fi alături de Nico, iubitul ei mult mai tânăr și dornic de atenție. Totul începe ca un spectacol cu intrigi și rivalități, dar după o furtună devastatoare, miza se schimbă: supraviețuirea devine mai importantă decât trofeul, iar un criminal începe să îi vâneze pe rând.
Lyla mi s-a părut un personaj interesant tocmai prin felul în care iese din tiparul clasic al unui concurs de televiziune. Ea este introvertită, nesigură, prinsă între loialitatea față de Nico și instinctele proprii de supraviețuire. Relația lor mi s-a părut fragilă și credibilă, cu momente de tensiune și contraste puternice. Restul cuplurilor aduc dinamism, dar unele personaje rămân doar schițe, fără profunzime.
Mi-a plăcut atmosfera exotică și ritmul rapid după furtună. Ruth Ware surprinde bine presiunea izolării și transformă un concurs de televiziune într-o luptă cu instinctele cele mai de bază. În unele momente, intriga are parfum de Agatha Christie, cu acea întrebare constantă: cine minte și cine urmează să dispară?
Totuși, ideea nu mi s-a părut deloc originală. Am citit „Cerul va fi indigo” de Monica Ramirez, care are aproape aceeași premisă și același tip de desfășurare, dar execuția mi s-a părut mult mai bună. La Ruth Ware, unele răsturnări de situație au părut forțate, iar finalul, deși surprinzător, nu a avut impactul pe care mi l-aș fi dorit. Am simțit că romanul rămâne mai degrabă la nivel de „roller-coaster de vacanță”: distractiv, dar nu foarte memorabil.
Pentru mine, „Un cuplu perfect” a fost o lectură plăcută, dar ușor superficială. Este cartea potrivită pentru concediu sau un weekend relaxant, când vrei să evadezi pe o insulă plină de mister și tensiuni, însă dacă ai citit deja povești similare, s-ar putea să ți se pară mai previzibilă. Eu i-am dat trei stele, pentru că a reușit să mă prindă, dar nu m-a convins că este ceva nou.
One Perfect Couple – Ruth Ware
I read “One Perfect Couple” by Ruth Ware with high expectations, especially since the premise sounded promising: a reality show called “The Perfect Couple”, filmed on an exotic island in the Indian Ocean, where five couples compete for money and fame. Among the contestants is Lyla, a young researcher going through a difficult moment in her career, who agrees to join the game only to be with Nico, her much younger and attention-seeking boyfriend. It all begins as a show full of intrigue and rivalries, but after a devastating storm, the stakes change: survival becomes more important than the trophy, and a killer starts hunting them down one by one.
Lyla struck me as an interesting character precisely because she breaks away from the typical mold of a TV contest participant. She is introverted, insecure, caught between her loyalty to Nico and her own survival instincts. Their relationship felt fragile and believable to me, with moments of tension and strong contrasts. The other couples bring dynamism, but some characters remain only sketches, lacking depth.
I enjoyed the exotic atmosphere and the fast pace after the storm. Ruth Ware captures the pressure of isolation well and turns a TV competition into a fight with the most basic instincts. At times, the plot has an Agatha Christie flavor, with that constant question: who is lying and who will disappear next?
However, I didn’t find the idea original at all. I read “The Sky Will Be Indigo” by Monica Ramirez, which has almost the same premise and type of development, but I thought the execution there was much better. In Ruth Ware’s book, some twists felt forced, and the ending, although surprising, didn’t have the impact I was hoping for. I felt the novel stayed more on the level of a “vacation roller-coaster”: entertaining, but not very memorable.
For me, “One Perfect Couple” was a pleasant but somewhat superficial read. It’s the right book for a holiday or a relaxing weekend when you want to escape to an island full of mystery and tension, but if you’ve already read similar stories, it might feel more predictable. I gave it three stars, because it did manage to grip me, but it didn’t convince me it brought anything new.
