Când am început să citesc „Dragoste sub pistol” de Emma Bond, mă așteptam să găsesc o poveste intensă despre iubire, răzbunare și curajul de a te reconstrui într-o lume plină de violență și imprevizibil. Așa este prezentată cartea, dar realitatea a fost mult mai slabă decât promisiunea.
În centrul poveștii se află Rosella, o tânără venită în New York să își urmeze studiile. Ar fi trebuit să fie un personaj puternic, hotărât și pasionat de educație. Dar imaginea asta se pierde repede, pentru că autoarea o transformă într-o eroină care se lasă purtată de val, prinsă în conflicte fără sens și într-o relație toxică. În loc să descopăr o femeie care luptă pentru visurile ei, am găsit o fată care cade mereu pradă emoțiilor contradictorii și alegerilor pripite.
Relația dintre Rosella și Antonio este nucleul romanului, dar, sincer, m-a obosit. Antonio este descris ca un bărbat arogant, impulsiv și marcat de trecut. El și Rosella ajung să lucreze împreună la un proiect universitar, dar tot ce urmează sunt certuri interminabile, atracție forțată și scene în care sarcasmul se vrea inteligent, dar devine obositor. Sub așa-zisa lor „chimie” nu am simțit decât superficialitate și un joc previzibil: ceartă, împăcare, iarăși ceartă.
Pe fundal, se vorbește despre mafie și clanuri care încă au putere, dar acest decor nu este deloc convingător. Totul rămâne la nivel de vorbe, ca și cum lumea periculoasă în care se află personajele ar fi doar o iluzie. Scenele care ar fi trebuit să aducă tensiune sau dramatism se consumă repede, fără profunzime, ca niște schițe neterminate.
Emma Bond încearcă să construiască o poveste urbană și captivantă, cu dialoguri tăioase și tensiune erotică, dar pentru mine a fost mai degrabă un șir de clișee. Personajele nu sunt memorabile, ci previzibile, iar povestea care ar fi trebuit să fie despre supraviețuire emoțională și alegeri grele se reduce la o relație toxică, pusă în decorul fals al unei lumi mafiote.
Pentru mine, „Dragoste sub pistol” a fost o experiență dezamăgitoare. În loc de intensitate și emoție reală, am primit un roman obositor, plin de scene forțate și replici artificiale. Nu m-a convins nici ca poveste de dragoste, nici ca roman de suspans. Din păcate, nu pot să îi dau mai mult de o stea.
Love Under the Gun – Emma Bond (La familia Adrianni, #1)
When I started reading „Love Under the Gun” by Emma Bond, I expected to find an intense story about love, revenge, and the courage to rebuild yourself in a world full of violence and unpredictability. That’s how the book is presented, but the reality turned out to be much weaker than the promise.
At the center of the story is Rosella, a young woman who comes to New York to pursue her studies. She should have been a strong, determined character, passionate about education. But that image quickly fades, as the author turns her into a heroine who simply drifts along, caught in pointless conflicts and a toxic relationship. Instead of discovering a woman fighting for her dreams, I found a girl who constantly falls prey to contradictory emotions and impulsive choices.
The relationship between Rosella and Antonio is the core of the novel, but honestly, it exhausted me. Antonio is portrayed as arrogant, impulsive, and haunted by his past. He and Rosella end up working together on a university project, but what follows is nothing more than endless arguments, forced attraction, and scenes where sarcasm tries to sound clever but only becomes tiring. Beneath their so-called “chemistry,” I felt only superficiality and a predictable cycle: fight, reconcile, fight again.
In the background, there’s talk of mafia and clans that supposedly still hold power, but this setting is far from convincing. Everything remains at the level of words, as if the dangerous world the characters inhabit is just an illusion. The scenes that should have brought tension or drama are over too quickly, lacking depth, like unfinished sketches.
Emma Bond tries to build an urban, captivating story with sharp dialogue and erotic tension, but to me it felt more like a string of clichés. The characters are not memorable, only predictable, and the story that should have been about emotional survival and tough choices is reduced to a toxic relationship placed against the false backdrop of a mafia world.
For me, „Love Under the Gun” was a disappointing experience. Instead of intensity and real emotion, I got a tiring novel, full of forced scenes and artificial lines. It didn’t convince me as a love story, nor as a suspense novel. Unfortunately, I can’t give it more than one star.
