Când am închis ultima pagină din „Stăpânul Muntelui” de Anders de la Motte, am rămas cu senzația că tocmai am trăit o aventură la limita dintre realitate și coșmar. Este genul de carte care te prinde de la primele rânduri și nu-ți mai dă drumul, cu o atmosferă nordică rece și tensionată, dar și cu momente în care te atașezi sincer de personajele principale.
Protagonista, Leonore „Leo” Asker, este o femeie curajoasă, încăpățânată și neînfricată, care știe să lupte chiar și atunci când toată lumea o subestimează. Se pregătea să devină șefa Brigăzii de Infracțiuni Grave din Malmö, dar o schimbare bruscă o trimite în subsol, la Departamentul Cazurilor Rătăcite – un loc considerat de alții lipsit de importanță. Leo vine însă dintr-o familie marcată de traume, cu un tată paranoic și obsedat de pregătirea pentru sfârșitul lumii, așa că știe ce înseamnă să nu poți avea încredere în nimeni.
Intriga pornește de la dispariția misterioasă a doi tineri, într-o excursie pe munte, când intră într-o peșteră și nu mai ies niciodată. În timpul anchetei, Leo descoperă o machetă feroviară ciudată, cu figurine care par să redea scene din viața reală – inclusiv chipul uneia dintre victime. Acest detaliu tulburător o conduce spre o investigație periculoasă, în care nimic nu este ceea ce pare. Alături de profesorul Martin Hill, pasionat de explorarea locurilor uitate, Leo încearcă să dezlege misterul, dar fiecare pas o apropie de un rău cu o imaginație întunecată și obsesivă.
Anders de la Motte reușește să construiască un suspans perfect dozat, alternând trecutul și prezentul într-un mod natural, fără să piardă ritmul. Atmosfera este claustrofobă și rece, iar scenele din tuneluri îți dau senzația că aerul devine mai greu, ca și cum ai fi acolo, împreună cu personajele. Îmi place că Leo nu este prezentată ca o eroină fără cusur – are temeri, greșește, dar nu renunță niciodată.
Pentru mine, „Stăpânul Muntelui” nu este doar un thriller polițist, ci și o poveste despre rezistență, curaj și lupta împotriva unui trecut care te urmărește. Am simțit frigul munților, teama din întuneric și adrenalina fiecărei descoperiri. Este o carte care merită cinci stele, pentru că te ține treaz până târziu și îți dă impresia că ai trăit, nu doar citit, această aventură.

When I turned the last page of „The Mountain King” by Anders de la Motte, I was left with the feeling that I had just lived through an adventure balanced on the edge between reality and nightmare. It’s the kind of book that grabs you from the very first lines and doesn’t let go, with a cold, tense Nordic atmosphere, yet moments where you truly grow attached to the main characters.
The protagonist, Leonore “Leo” Asker, is a brave, stubborn, and fearless woman who knows how to fight even when everyone underestimates her. She was on track to become head of the Serious Crimes Unit in Malmö, but a sudden change sends her to the basement, to the Department of Lost Causes—a place most consider irrelevant. However, Leo comes from a family marked by trauma, with a paranoid father obsessed with preparing for the end of the world, so she knows what it means to trust no one.
The story begins with the mysterious disappearance of two young people during a mountain hike—they enter a cave and never come out. During the investigation, Leo discovers a strange model railway, with figurines that seem to depict real-life scenes—including the face of one of the victims. This disturbing clue leads her into a dangerous investigation where nothing is as it seems. Alongside Professor Martin Hill, a man passionate about exploring forgotten places, Leo tries to unravel the mystery, but each step brings her closer to a mind with a dark and obsessive imagination.
Anders de la Motte manages to build perfectly measured suspense, shifting between past and present in a natural way without losing the rhythm. The atmosphere is claustrophobic and chilling, and the scenes in the tunnels make the air feel heavier, as if you’re right there alongside the characters. I like that Leo isn’t portrayed as a flawless heroine—she has fears, makes mistakes, but never gives up.
For me, „The Mountain King” is not just a crime thriller, but also a story about resilience, courage, and fighting against a past that haunts you. I could feel the mountain cold, the fear in the darkness, and the adrenaline of each discovery. It’s a book that deserves five stars because it keeps you up late at night and makes you feel like you’ve lived—not just read—this adventure.
