„Umbrella Academy: Suita Apocalipsei” m-a surprins plăcut de la primele pagini. Este o poveste atipică cu supereroi, dar și profund emoționantă, plină de mister, umor negru și un stil vizual absolut memorabil, datorat talentului lui Gabriel Bá. Gerard Way, cunoscut mai ales ca solistul trupei My Chemical Romance, a creat aici un univers cu totul special – întunecat, haotic și fascinant.
Totul începe într-o zi ciudată, când 43 de femei din întreaga lume nasc brusc, fără să fi fost însărcinate. Un excentric miliardar, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (un om… sau poate mai mult decât un om?), adoptă șapte dintre acești copii, convinși că au abilități extraordinare. Îi crește sub numele de „Umbrella Academy”, transformându-i în eroi de mici.
Cei șapte copii adoptați de Sir Reginald Hargreeves sunt cu totul speciali și diferiți între ei. Luther, cunoscut ca Numărul 1, este liderul grupului, are o forță ieșită din comun și un corp modificat în urma unei misiuni eșuate, dar se simte adesea singur și neînțeles. Diego, Numărul 2, este un spirit rebel, expert în aruncarea cuțitelor, mereu în conflict cu autoritatea. Allison, sau Numărul 3, are o putere aparte – poate schimba realitatea doar rostind fraza „Am auzit un zvon că…”, dar această abilitate i-a adus și multă suferință personală. Klaus, Numărul 4, poate comunica cu morții, o povară care l-a împins spre dependențe, încercând să-și liniștească mintea plină de voci. Numărul 5 a dispărut în copilărie și s-a întors brusc, cu chip de copil, dar cu mintea unui om matur care a călătorit în timp – el este cel care anunță apropierea apocalipsei. Ben, Numărul 6, a murit, dar influența lui încă se simte, mai ales prin Klaus. Iar Vanya, cea de-a șaptea, pare să fie singura fără puteri – este tratată cu răceală de ceilalți și trăiește cu durerea de a fi mereu lăsată deoparte. Însă rolul ei se va dovedi mult mai important decât și-ar fi imaginat cineva.
Reuniunea fraților vine după moartea tatălui lor adoptiv. Însă ceea ce ar fi trebuit să fie un moment de doliu devine începutul unei curse contracronometru. Numărul 5 dezvăluie că apocalipsa e aproape, iar sursa distrugerii este chiar cineva din familia lor…
Ce m-a atras cel mai mult la această poveste este felul în care personajele sunt construite. Fiecare este marcat de traumele copilăriei, de lipsa iubirii părintești și de faptul că au fost crescuți mai mult ca niște soldați decât ca oameni. Relațiile dintre ei sunt tensionate, pline de conflicte și dureri nespuse, dar totodată există și o legătură profundă, aproape imposibil de rupt.
Stilul grafic este extraordinar – desenele sunt expresive, dinamice și se potrivesc perfect cu atmosfera haotică și fantastică a poveștii. Îți dă senzația că totul se poate prăbuși în orice clipă… și chiar se întâmplă.
Finalul este exploziv, iar Vanya devine un personaj central, într-un mod total neașteptat. Transformarea ei este una dintre cele mai puternice părți ale romanului grafic și ridică întrebări importante despre identitate, acceptare și ce înseamnă cu adevărat puterea.
Recomand cu toată inima „Umbrella Academy: Suita Apocalipsei” tuturor celor care iubesc poveștile cu supereroi, dar vor ceva diferit, mai întunecat, mai profund. Este o lectură care te face să zâmbești, dar și să reflectezi. Iar după ce o termini, cu siguranță vei vrea să citești și volumele următoare. Eu una abia aștept să continui seria!

„The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite” pleasantly surprised me from the very first pages. It’s an unconventional superhero story, but also a deeply emotional one, filled with mystery, dark humor, and a truly unforgettable visual style, thanks to the talent of Gabriel Bá. Gerard Way, best known as the lead singer of My Chemical Romance, has created a completely unique universe – dark, chaotic, and utterly fascinating.
It all begins on a strange day, when 43 women around the world suddenly give birth, despite not being pregnant. An eccentric billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (a man… or perhaps something more?), adopts seven of these children, convinced they possess extraordinary abilities. He raises them under the name „The Umbrella Academy,” training them to become heroes from a very young age.
The seven children adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves are each incredibly special and different from one another. Luther, known as Number One, is the group’s leader. He possesses immense strength and a body altered by a failed mission, but he often feels lonely and misunderstood. Diego, Number Two, is a rebellious spirit, an expert knife-thrower, always clashing with authority. Allison, or Number Three, has a unique power – she can alter reality by saying, “I heard a rumor that…” – but this ability has also brought her a lot of personal pain. Klaus, Number Four, can communicate with the dead – a burden that’s led him to addiction as he tries to quiet the voices in his head. Number Five disappeared as a child and suddenly returned, still in a child’s body but with the mind of an adult who has traveled through time – he is the one who warns of the approaching apocalypse. Ben, Number Six, is dead, but his influence is still present, especially through Klaus. And Vanya, the seventh, appears to be the only one without powers – she is treated coldly by the others and lives with the pain of always being left out. But her role will prove to be far more important than anyone could have imagined.
The siblings reunite after the death of their adoptive father. But what should have been a moment of mourning quickly becomes a race against time. Number Five reveals that the apocalypse is imminent – and that the source of the destruction is one of their own…
What captivated me most about this story is the way the characters are built. Each one carries the scars of childhood trauma, the absence of parental love, and the fact that they were raised more like soldiers than children. Their relationships are tense, full of unspoken pain and conflict, but there’s also a deep bond between them – one that’s nearly impossible to break.
The graphic style is outstanding – the illustrations are expressive, dynamic, and perfectly matched to the chaotic, fantastical atmosphere of the story. It gives you the feeling that everything could fall apart at any moment… and it really does.
The ending is explosive, with Vanya emerging as a central character in a completely unexpected way. Her transformation is one of the most powerful parts of the graphic novel and raises important questions about identity, acceptance, and the true meaning of power.
I wholeheartedly recommend „The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite” to anyone who loves superhero stories but is looking for something different – darker, deeper, and more thought-provoking. It’s a read that makes you smile, but also reflect. And once you finish it, you’ll definitely want to dive into the next volumes. I, for one, can’t wait to continue the series!
