„James” de Percival Everett este o reinterpretare profundă și emoționantă a romanului clasic „Aventurile lui Huckleberry Finn” de Mark Twain, dar spusă din perspectiva sclavului Jim, care aici capătă un nume complet – James – și o voce puternică, profund umană.
Mi-a plăcut mult ideea autorului de a da glas unui personaj care, în original, era adesea redus la un rol secundar. În acest roman, James nu mai este doar „sclavul care fuge”, ci un bărbat inteligent, sensibil, ironic și curajos, care își ascunde adevărata natură pentru a supraviețui într-o lume crudă și nedreaptă.
Ce m-a impresionat cel mai tare a fost lupta interioară a lui James. Deși este forțat să se prefacă a fi naiv sau lipsit de educație, în realitate, el citește, scrie și înțelege perfect lumea în care trăiește. Este nevoit să joace un rol pentru a nu fi considerat periculos. Este dureros, dar și foarte realist. M-a făcut să mă gândesc cât de multe fețe trebuie să-și construiască cineva doar pentru a fi lăsat în pace.
Acțiunea urmează în mare parte drumul clasic al romanului lui Twain – James fuge pentru libertate și se întâlnește cu Huck, un băiat alb care îl ajută. Relația dintre cei doi este una complexă: Huck este încă un copil, crescut într-o societate care îl învață că sclavia este normală, dar inima lui îi spune altceva. Între James și Huck se leagă o prietenie fragilă, dar sinceră, care trece prin multe încercări.
Percival Everett reușește să adauge și umor, sarcasm și reflecții profunde despre identitate, libertate și ipocrizia societății americane din acea vreme. Multe scene sunt pline de tensiune, mai ales când James trebuie să ia decizii grele pentru a-și salva viața și pentru a-și regăsi familia. Există și momente violente sau tulburătoare, dar care nu sunt gratuite – ele arată realitatea dură a sclaviei, fără a o îndulci.
De ce nu i-am dat cinci stele? Poate pentru că, pe alocuri, romanul are un ritm mai lent și unele pasaje filozofice mi s-au părut prea lungi. Dar asta nu înseamnă că povestea nu m-a prins – din contră, am citit cu emoție și am simțit că James este un personaj pe care nu-l voi uita prea curând.
„James” este o carte care m-a făcut să mă gândesc mai profund la ce înseamnă libertatea, curajul și demnitatea. O lectură necesară, care aduce lumină acolo unde de multe ori istoria a păstrat tăcerea.
Patru stele bine meritate pentru o poveste dureroasă, dar puternică, spusă cu multă inteligență și umanitate.

„James” by Percival Everett is a powerful and deeply moving retelling of the classic novel „The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain, but told from the perspective of the enslaved man Jim—who, in this version, is given a full name, James, and a strong, deeply human voice.
I really appreciated the author’s idea of giving a voice to a character who, in the original, was often reduced to a secondary role. In this novel, James is no longer just “the runaway slave,” but an intelligent, sensitive, ironic, and brave man who hides his true nature in order to survive in a cruel and unjust world.
What impressed me the most was James’s inner struggle. Although he is forced to pretend to be naive or uneducated, in reality, he reads, writes, and fully understands the world he lives in. He has to play a part in order not to be seen as dangerous. It’s painful, but also very realistic. It made me think about how many different faces someone has to build just to be left alone.
The storyline largely follows the path of Twain’s original novel—James runs away seeking freedom and meets Huck, a white boy who helps him. The relationship between the two is complex: Huck is still a child, raised in a society that teaches him slavery is normal, yet his heart tells him otherwise. A fragile but sincere friendship forms between James and Huck, tested by many challenges.
Percival Everett also manages to weave in humor, sarcasm, and profound reflections on identity, freedom, and the hypocrisy of American society at the time. Many scenes are tense, especially when James must make difficult choices to save his life and find his family. There are also violent or disturbing moments, but they never feel gratuitous—they portray the harsh reality of slavery without sugarcoating it.
Why didn’t I give it five stars? Maybe because, at times, the novel has a slower pace and some philosophical passages felt a bit too long. But that doesn’t mean the story didn’t captivate me—on the contrary, I read it with emotion and felt that James is a character I won’t forget anytime soon.
„James” is a book that made me reflect more deeply on what freedom, courage, and dignity truly mean. A necessary read that sheds light where history has often remained silent.
A well-deserved four stars for a painful yet powerful story, told with great intelligence and humanity.
