Când am început să citesc „Escapada” de Isabelle Broom, nu mă așteptam să fiu atât de profund captivată de povestea lui Kate și de călătoria ei spre redescoperirea de sine pe frumoasa insulă Hvar. Am fost atrasă inițial de descrierea vibrantă a Croației, un loc pe care am visat mereu să-l vizitez, însă am rămas pentru povestea plină de emoție și pentru complexitatea personajelor.
Kate nu este un protagonist tipic. Este o femeie rănită, care fuge de un trecut plin de durere și rușine. Faptul că a ales să se retragă pe o insulă mică, unde nimeni nu o cunoaște, mi-a părut a fi un gest de curaj, dar și o încercare disperată de a găsi pace. Am rezonat cu dorința ei de a se pierde în peisajele idilice ale Croației, dar și de a se reconstrui bucățică cu bucățică, în tăcere și izolare.
Întâlnirea ei cu Alex aduce un suflu nou în poveste. Legătura dintre ei, construită pe o bază de vulnerabilitate reciprocă, mi s-a părut atât de reală și de autentică. When I started reading “The Getaway” by Isabelle Broom, I didn’t expect to be so deeply captivated by Kate’s story and her journey of self-rediscovery on the beautiful island of Hvar. Initially, I was drawn in by the vibrant description of Croatia—a place I’ve always dreamed of visiting—but I stayed for the emotional story and the complexity of the characters.
Kate is not your typical protagonist. She’s a wounded woman running from a past full of pain and shame. Her decision to retreat to a small island where no one knows her felt like an act of bravery, but also a desperate attempt to find peace. I resonated with her desire to lose herself in the idyllic landscapes of Croatia while quietly piecing herself back together in silence and solitude.
Her encounter with Alex brings a fresh breath of life to the story. The connection between them, built on a foundation of mutual vulnerability, felt incredibly real and authentic. Alex, with his well-guarded secrets, is far from being a typical hero, which only made him more appealing to me. He’s a complex character, and their relationship evolves naturally, without feeling forced or superficial.
What I loved most about this book is how Broom explores themes of loss, healing, and forgiveness. Although Kate’s story is full of sadness, it’s also a story about hope and the strength to keep moving forward, no matter how heavy the burden you carry.
Despite the paradisiacal setting, “The Getaway” is not just a simple escape story. It’s a profound novel that makes you reflect on your own choices and the way the past shapes the present.
The only reason I didn’t give this book five stars is that certain moments in the story felt predictable, and some narrative threads could have been developed further. Even so, “The Getaway” is an emotional and captivating read that held my attention until the very last page.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a story full of sensitivity and introspection, as well as to those who want to be transported on the wings of a journey to a stunning corner of the world, rich in mystery and beauty.
